Welcome...
How to DRUG PROOF YOUR KIDS aims to equip parents with the strategies needed to more effectively steer their children away from the harmful use of drugs.
It enables you as parents to get together, hear each others stories, learn how to intervene, get help and protect your children as they approach their vulnerable teenage years. The programme consists of six sessions and is aimed at PARENTS of 8 – 14 year olds.
Both the programme and presentation will encourage you as parents that you are the most important influence in your children’s lives.
...what you say and do counts.
Parents
Parents Can Make a Significant Difference!
Extensive research shows that parents and families whanautanga can be a vital factor in keeping children from becoming involved with the harmful use of drugs, including alcohol.
We want to encourage you not to take your hands off your children during their teenage years but to stay involved and connected. So often we talk to parents while standing on the sports side line or at the school gate who are feeling overwhelmed at the possibility of drug and alcohol involvement during their children’s teenage years – some seemed to have resigned themselves to “This is the way it is, while others put their heads in the sand and say “This won’t affect my child”.
Better informed parents communicate more effectively, and a knowledge of available resources puts parents in a position to significantly reduce the risks.
The reality is: it will affect your child but you are the key influence in how your child responds.

Introduction to the Programme |

The How to Drug Proof Your Kids® programme was created in response to the needs of parents. It is based on sound research that clearly indicates the importance of a healthy family environment, where high levels of parent connectedness can reduce the risk of harmful drug use by their children. Unfortunately, that is not to say our children will always make the right choices.
Can parents ‘drug proof’ their kids? No. This parenting programme is not merely a neatly packaged set of answers, nor does it naively tell young people to just say “no”. We do not believe there is any one simple solution towards addressing what has become a complex issue in our society. However, this programme does concentrate on the important role a parent or significant caregiver can play in reducing the risk of harmful drug use. It also equips parents to establish protective factors that will assist their children to make good choices.
With an emphasis on prevention this programme is designed to:
- Give parents a realistic overview of drug use in society and its related harm
- Provide parents with an understanding of protective factors and the role they play in helping to steer our kids clear of harmful drug use
- Help parents establish strategies that will strengthen their influence in areas such as their own wellbeing, communication, and responding to issues such as alcohol use
- Educate and empower parents with skills and strategies that will influence their children’s choices regarding the harmful use of drugs
- Encourage parents to examine their own beliefs, attitudes and behaviours regarding their own drug use and how conflicting messages can influence theirs children’s choices
- Provide parents with a sense of community-based support
